Apple Inc. has partnered with network operator T-Mobile to introduce the iPhone in Germany on Nov. 9, the companies announced on Wednesday.

The iPhone will cost ,399 (US$553) including sales tax with a two-year service contract. In the U.S., the same phone now sells for $399, after launching at $599.

The deal will come as some consolation to T-Mobile, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG, which saw rival AT&T Inc. win the right to distribute the iPhone in the U.S.

From Nov. 9, the operator will sell the iPhone through Deutsche Telekom stores, and through the T-Mobile online store, it said.

The phone will go on sale in the U.K. on the same day, operator O2 (UK) Ltd. and Apple announced Tuesday. The phone will cost #269 ($538) in the U.K. with an 18-month contract.

All eyes are now on France, where analysts expect Orange, the mobile phone and Internet access division of France Tilicom SA, to announce that it has won the exclusive right to distribute the phone there. Orange representatives were not immediately available to comment.

The iPhone has been a success in the U.S.: one million were sold in the 74 days following its June 29 launch.

Apple revealed a new version of the iPhone firmware, 1.1.1 on Friday with a new settings menu for international language options not seen in previous versions.

Almost everything was predicted beforehand, except the rather clever idea behind O2’s service which will see it partner with European-wide WiFi network The Cloud to bundle in access for iPhone customers and the fact that the Apple iPhone will switch seamlessly onto those Wifi nodes.

• The handset, which will be available exclusively to O2 customers, will cost £269 - more than the $399 (£200) that it costs in the US. Users will have to sign an 18-month contract priced at either £35, £45, or £55 depending on the call package, but this covers “unlimited” per month usage across O2’s network and 7,500 WiFi hotspots managed by The Cloud.

• 02 has partnered with independent retailer Carphone Warehouse to sell the phone, giving Apple 1300 points of distribution in total, covering 90% of the UK population.

• Every store will have an Apple iPhone expert in store. And there will be a dedicated care centre for iPhone customers.

• O2 has fired up its network with the slower Edge technology (as against Europe’s love affair with HSDPA) to accomodate the iPhone.

• There is no 3G iPhone as yet because, as Jobs said at the launch, the “The trade off with 3G [in battery life] is too bad right now.”

Well it's here! Launched in The US on Friday evening (29th June 2007) the most eagerly anticipated phone ever, Apple's Iphone, hit the shops. It's not expected to be released in the UK until October 2007.

Cisco and Apple today announced that they have resolved their dispute involving the "iPhone" trademark. After more than a month of public sparring, the companies recently agreed to several legal extensions, following the Cisco lawsuit over the iPhone trademark (in the US as well as in the UK).

Under the agreement, both companies are free to use the "iPhone" trademark on their products throughout the world, according to the release. Both companies acknowledge the trademark ownership rights that have been granted, and each side will dismiss any pending actions regarding the trademark.

In addition, Cisco and Apple will explore opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security, and consumer and enterprise communications. Both companies, however, said that other terms of the agreement are confidential.

Apple has called the lawsuit ''silly'' and argued that it's entitled to use the iPhone name because the phones operate over different networks. Apple's works using cellular technology, and Cisco's operates over the Internet using a technology called Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.
